Hospital Compare Expands Hospital Quality Information for Consumers

Updated Website Highlights Care in the Emergency Department and Other Information

WASHINGTON, July 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA) today applauded the public availability of new information on hospital quality of care at the Hospital Compare website (www.HospitalCompare.hhs.gov).  The HQA is a broad working group of hospitals, consumer representatives, physician and nursing organizations, employers and payers, oversight organizations and government agencies dedicated to improving health care quality and making useful and understandable information about hospital quality available to the public.

For the first time, the updated website for consumers and clinicians includes information on how often hospitals take the right steps to treat patients who go to the emergency department because of a heart attack or chest pain, as well as surgical patients receiving care in outpatient settings. Also included are data on outpatient imaging services.  

This information builds on data currently available on how often hospitals take the right steps to provide inpatient care to heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical patients and information on how patients view their care.  

Additionally, the HQA noted today that hospital readmission and mortality rates for patients with heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia, which are updated annually, have been updated to reflect data from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2009.  

The HQA supports efforts to identify meaningful information that the public and caregivers can use in making health care decisions and that hospitals can use to improve the care they provide.  The growing collection of clinical information on Hospital Compare provides an ever-expanding array of information for patients and hospitals.
