HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Freshly arrived from the North Pole to take part in the 2009 Hollywood Christmas Parade, Santa Claus brought some early holiday joy to over 1,000 needy children and teens from area shelters and programs gathered at the L. Ron Hubbard Winter Wonderland Sunday night.

Santa and his elves unloaded bags stuffed with toys, Walt Disney DVDs and the family-oriented Stories from the Golden Age book series donated by area businesses. Pirates, cowboys and other story characters were also on hand at the Wonderland after appearing on the "Golden Age Express," an award-winning parade float based on Hubbard's high-action stories written in the 1930s and 1940s.

"We anticipated that a lot of kids would show up, but I was not prepared for the overwhelming response -- we were literally mobbed!" said Diana Carlton, one of the volunteers dressed as a Geisha who assisted in distributing the gifts. Event sponsors who provided the gifts included Audiology & Associates, Color West Printing/Packaging, Inc., Distribution Video & Audio, Hirschey & Associates, LTD Enterprises, Pasadena Family Dental Center, Stevedores Physical Rehabilitation and the Wellness Support Network.

Carmen Barth, a local musician dressed as Pirate Captain Tom Bristol, stated, "It was so rewarding being able to provide some holiday cheer. It really was a very magical moment."

The Stories from the Golden Age series is a line of books and audiobooks -- mystery, suspense, thriller, science fiction, fantasy and western stories -- all written by Hubbard in the 1930s and 1940s, considered the "golden age" of pulp fiction. The print books are being republished with their original magazine artwork by Hollywood-based Galaxy Press as part of a massive six-year publishing program.
