Hurricane Sandy Survivor Joy Ortiz Rises Above Financial Ruin From The Storm & Finds Entrepreneurial Success
JJ's Best Brand expands distribution for fine high quality condiments
HOBOKEN, N.J., Oct. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Starting Friday October 25th - Wednesday Oct. 30th, Joy Ortiz will celebrate "One Year of Surviving" Super Storm Sandy by hosting a community event at Bazzzarelli's in Moonachie, N.J. During the event, Joy Ortiz will be showcasing her JJ's Best Cilantro Lime Dressing currently shelved at Whole Foods and available online and debuting her newest product, Bloody Mary Rim Salt, set to hit shelves nationwide in the next few months.
"When Super Storm Sandy hit my hometown of Little Ferry, N.J. and her café restaurant in Garfield, N.J., like so many others, we lost everything," said Ortiz. "Not only did our home get swallowed by rising waters, but the blackouts spoiled our café inventory and destroyed all of the JJ's Best Cilantro Lime dressing we were about to ship to Whole Foods for the its product launch. I had no idea how I would come back from these three major strikes."
Determined to succeed and not let "Sandy" destroy all of her hard work, Ortiz rebuilt her inventory and with heart, soul and determination made her way back to the shelves of Whole Foods. Her product line is well received and growing throughout their chain.
"I conceptualize and create items I want to use, but cannot find," said Ortiz. She was unable to recoup the loss of inventory at her lunch café, so instead of defaulting on her lease, she turned the space into her manufacturing facility and has continued to create new product. Shortly her line will expand into a vast retail market Nationwide including her Bloody Mary Rim Salt, Sugars and other confections used in cooking and as condiment accents to beverages.
Ortiz is hosting this celebration to thank her community for its support throughout these trying times, particularly in helping rebuild her home. Ortiz shared her home with her parents, so recovery was challenging as her father suffers with Dementia and Parkinson's. Tending to their health and well-being was her first priority. Her family eventually found their way back to their home with the help of Rebuilding Together Bergen County. Their home is still undergoing renovations to the lower level of the house.
This is not the first storm Ortiz has survived. At the age of 65 and 75 respectively, her retired Veteran father and mother bought their first home so they could leave a legacy to their children. Joy had taken on the role of caretaker to her parents and since they purchased the home, the family has survived 4 devastating floods which bestowed financial burden and emotional stress that most people would not withstand.
The 3 day event, sponsored in part by Absolut, will be held at Brazzarelli's, 117 Moonachie Road, Moonachie, NJ 07024 (Friday 12 PM – 10 PM), (Saturday 6 PM – 11 PM) (Sunday 3 PM – 11 PM) Joy Ortiz & JJ's Best will be on hand to sell and share product and donate baskets to raise funds for other Hurricane Sandy Survivors. On Friday October 30th the final raffle basket winners will be announced with Ortiz on hand for the celebration.
