H.VIR Comet(R) Infrared Window From Square D Allows for Safe Inspection Without Downtime

Infrared Scanning Can Identify Maintenance Problems Before They Occur

PALATINE, Ill., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- New infrared windows can be
installed in electrical equipment to help locate faulty components before they
cause costly downtime problems. With the H.VIR COMET(R) Infrared Inspection
Window from Square D, electrical inspections can be performed at any time
without the typical shutdowns or the danger of electric shock.
"Abnormal heat produced by electrical systems may indicate potential
electrical problems from a variety of causes," said Joy Sonn, product
marketing manager at Square D. "Our unaided eyes can only see the
discoloration of components - but infrared testing can detect heat build-up to
 quickly identify problem areas."
The H.VIR Comet Infrared Window is a patented transparent window that
enables permanent visible access for a safe and simple inspection of
electrical components without interrupting production. When potential problem
areas are identified through the infrared inspections, engineers can take
corrective action before costly maintenance is required. The complete unit is
permanently fitted to the electrical equipment, such as medium and low voltage
switchboards, transformers and generator control panels, to allow immediate
and permanent access for infrared inspections.
The window lets maintenance engineers record the internal temperatures of
equipment while it is energized, without exposure to the live components.
Specially developed for infrared inspections, the window is made of a glass-
like material that transmits infrared rays, which are registered by a
thermographic camera. It allows wavelength transmissions for all infrared
cameras including Agema, Amber, FLIR, Inframetrics, LAND, Mitsubishi, I.S.I.
 and others.
Various viewing area diameters are available up to 4 inches and in short
wave or long wave lengths. The window, which is ideal for retrofits and
upgrades of existing electrical equipment, is a UL approved component.
For large and/or complex electrical line-ups, Power System Engineers from
Square D can help determine the optimum configuration and provide installation
drawings, which can then be installed by Square D Services' nationwide network
of technicians. Infrared Inspection Services are also available.
"We recommend infrared scanning in conjunction with a standard periodic
maintenance and testing program to improve equipment reliability," Sonn said.
"Regular infrared inspections may even qualify some sites for reduced
 insurance premiums."
