Dec 01, 2004, 00:00 ET from I Love NY Energy

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- I Love NY Energy, an initiative
committed to promoting New York State's growing energy industry, was
officially launched today at Power-Gen International, the world's largest
 power generation conference.
The first initiative of its kind in the nation, I Love NY Energy was
founded to promote awareness of the advantages of starting, growing and
building energy-related companies in New York State. Coordinated by
representatives from industry, higher education and economic development and
government organizations, I Love NY Energy will hold its inaugural reception
this evening at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, room S230D at
 5 p.m.
"The application of exciting new technologies, from photovoltaics to fuel
cells, means that energy-related companies of all sizes will be changing
rapidly over the next decade," said Pradeep Haldar, Ph.D., founder of I Love
NY Energy and director of the Energy and Environmental Technology Application
Center (E2TAC) at Albany NanoTech, one of the world's largest centers for
nanotechnology R&D. "Our goal is to ensure New York energy companies are well
positioned to leverage these new technologies, while nurturing and supporting
start-up energy companies that seek to bring more innovation to New York
"New York State's commitment to industry and history of innovation
provides energy companies like Plug Power with a clear competitive advantage,"
said Mark Sperry, Chief Marketing Officer at Plug Power, Inc. in Latham, NY.
"By working together through common initiatives like I Love NY Energy, we
enhance cooperation within New York State's thriving energy community, while
promoting the region to the outside community."
Haldar, professor of nanoscience at Albany NanoTech's College of Nanoscale
Science and Engineering at UAlbany, conducts research with industrial partners
to employ nanotechnology to energy and environmental research. E2TAC has
ongoing collaborations with many New York-based energy companies, including
Plug Power, Blasch Precision Ceramics, GE Global Research and Daystar
"New York State energy companies enjoy a great competitive advantage in
the strong support they receive from the state's elected officials, including
Governor George Pataki, Senator Charles Schumer, Congressman John Sweeney and
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. That support has been instrumental to
keeping New York State on the cutting edge of energy-related technology -- to
the benefit of the entire community," Haldar added.
The inspiration for I Love NY Energy came from two existing organizations:
I Love NY Nanotech and New Energy New York. Founded in 2003, the successful I
Love NY Nanotech initiative promotes the development of nanotechnology-related
business and research in New York State. Its membership currently includes
 over 40 companies and organizations.
New Energy New York is a coalition of regional energy technology
organizations convened to expand and promote energy technology excellence
throughout New York's Hudson "Tech" Valley corridor. The task force grew out
of a forum hosted by Senator Schumer in December of 2002 to explore how the
region's high-tech companies could interact to address energy-related
 technology issues.
The over 50 New York State energy companies participating in Power-Gen
International will meet delegates from U.S. Commercial Service offices in over
30 countries. The international delegates are attending the show through the
auspices of the U.S. Commercial Service's International Buyer Program and have
been invited to the reception to facilitate networking between the New York
 companies and potential international buyers.
In addition to Albany NanoTech, coordinators of the I Love NY Energy
initiatives include U.S. Commercial Service, Empire State Development, the New
York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), and the Center
for Economic Growth, Company sponsors for the reception include EOne Utility
Systems, Greno Industries, MSE Power Systems Inc., and Plug Power, Inc.
