Innovative Danish Project Sets new Standards for Medical Imaging Nationwide instant access to consolidated diagnostic images and reports - in seconds!

CHICAGO, March 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

Lena, a senior Danish radiologist, who is on call from home miles away from the hospital, receives a call from Peter, a younger colleague on duty in the hospital. Peter needs an immediate second opinion. Lena logs on to the hospital EMR system over mobile broadband and sees all the patient data. The EMR system shows a 900 slice CT exam in the hospital and a prior CT study taken in a neighboring region. She pushes a button and in seconds the studies show up on the screen in DICOM quality. She sends Peter a text message inviting him to a real-time, online collaboration session to give him guidance using all the necessary diagnostic tools including all 2D and 3D functionalities.

This is neither a vision nor a dream but it is becoming the reality in Denmark.

Getting instant access to consolidated images and reports from outside radiology is still a dream for most radiologists and clinicians - even more so for images and reports from different regions and imaging platforms.

Three years ago the Danish regions decided to implement a new and visionary project called IBI (Interregional Image Index) providing instant access to diagnostic-quality DICOM, non-DICOM images and reports across Denmark. Radiologists and clinicians will be able to access examination results in seconds from any third-party application over common internet connections including mobile broadband. There is no need for radiologists and clinicians to pay any attention to geography, IT infrastructure, workstation type, etc.

The project was based on an independent analysis that showed a significant ROI primarily based on reducing the number of retakes and the amount of time spent on transferring studies between hospitals and regions. Obviously the project will also have a huge positive impact on patient treatment.

Region Zeeland in Denmark was chosen to front the project and to host the interregional infrastructure. The technology uses a VNA paired with EasyViz, a streaming-based enterprise imaging solution from Danish Medical Insight, and XDS infrastructure from Swedish Mawell.

For Denmark, this project is a quantum leap in simplifying the way patient data is accessed. There are no costly retakes and no waiting time, and there is fast access to clinical expertise and improved patient care, which adds complete mobility to clinical workflows.
