iStor Networks Selects Toshiba's 0.13-Micron Process Technology to Power Storage Controller for SAN Over IP Toshiba Delivers Turnkey Solution With Lowest Possible NRE; Achieves High

Integration and High-Pin-Count Design Goals With Storage Processor Custom SoC

That Replaces Eight Chips and Controllers

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic
Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced that iStor Networks, Inc.(TM), a
leading technology provider for network storage controller solutions, selected
the Toshiba Corporation (Toshiba) 0.13-micron process technology to enable its
GigaStorATX(TM) storage controller solution for SAN over IP. At the heart of
the iStor iSCSI solution is the highly integrated, high-performance iSNP8008
iSCSI/TCP/IP off-load custom SoC. The device houses embedded processors
running a fully featured, integrated Storage Virtualization firmware stack and
can sustain 10GbE wire speed iSCSI traffic.
"It was key for us to develop a relationship for predictable development
and delivery," said Simon Huang, co-founder, president and chief executive
officer at iStor Networks, Inc. "The Toshiba SoC enables a very cost-
effective solution, compared to other iSCSI storage controller options."
iStor performed an extensive evaluation and concluded that Toshiba stood out
from the alternatives both strategically and tactically. As Toshiba holds a
significant technological lead in delivering production-volume, high-yield
90nm and 130nm custom SoCs and ASICs, iStor realized that it would not be
compromised by technical constraints. Toshiba worked closely with iStor to
provide a turnkey solution that allowed iStor to achieve the required level of
integration and the high pin counts needed for its product while lowering the
 non-recurring cost.
"The collaborative teams from iStor and Toshiba met the iStor market
window, allowing iStor to introduce an innovative product into a high-
potential growth market while meeting cost and performance targets. iStor can
potentially drive rapid adoption of the iSCSI standard by providing a custom
SoC that allows storage vendors to come to market faster and reduce their
overall costs for iSCSI-based storage systems," said Dr. Rakesh Sethi,
director of business development in the Custom SoC and Foundry Business Unit
 at TAEC.
"The iStor design goal was to lower the cost-per-gigabyte of storage along
with achieving high levels of integration," Dr. Sethi continued. "We used a
hyper-accelerated design flow and our proven 0.13-micron process technology to
expedite the development and delivery of an advanced single-chip SoC that
replaced eight chips and controllers." The iStor single-chip SoC replaced two
or more iSCSI/TOE/network chips, one to two fire-breathing Intel processor
chips, a three-chip processor chipset and two SATA RAID controllers.
