IT Employment Posts Modest Decline in November as Longer Term Trend Stabilizes
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- After experiencing consistent IT job losses earlier in the year, IT employment appears to have stabilized in recent months, according to TechServe Alliance, a collaboration of IT services firms, clients, consultants and suppliers.
IT employment was 3,814,800 in November 2009, which was a decline of 0.3 percent from October. IT jobs reached their peak in November 2008 almost a year after the recession officially started and are down 6 percent from that time.
"Although there was a modest month-over-month decline of IT employment in November, it appears that IT employment is continuing to level off and we anticipate growing demand as the economy improves," said Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance.
"IT job metrics vary on a month-to-month basis, as with employment numbers across all industries. However, we have clearly seen a trend over the past quarter suggesting IT employment has stabilized," Roberts said. "This is further validated by the results of TechServe Alliance's recent Pulse Survey tracking performance of IT staffing and solutions firms which points to growth in client demand for the services of these companies. We see this as a positive harbinger for the overall IT employment picture, and a strong indicator that we will see growth in overall IT employment in the foreseeable future."

Technical note: TechServe Alliance's IT Employment Index is the first specific measurement of IT employment. This unique measurement of total IT employment is created monthly by studying the ongoing staffing patterns of a dozen IT and computer-related occupations in 16 industries and industry sectors employing significant numbers of IT workers including the manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, financial, information services, business and professional services, and education and health industries. The monthly IT Employment Index is based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, which is subject to monthly revisions, and therefore, the Index is revised accordingly. The IT Employment Index is also subject to annual revisions and was benchmarked in February 2009 with the publication of the BLS January 2008 employment report, which included revisions to several years of employment data.
