IT Guy Quits Corporate Dream Job Over a Puppy

PASADENA, Calif., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- At 10 weeks, Jackie Brown had already flunked out of two homes and pit bull types don't get many chances. Then one day in early 2009, the spunky, irrepressible 12-lb. puppy climbed into the lap of someone fixing a computer in a cold warehouse in Pomona, CA.

By 2010, in the teeth of a brutal economy, Michael Patton makes a decision. "I had a dream job. My boss not only loved Survivor but desperately wanted me to get on the show! You can't replace that!" Michael quickly dives into documenting a revolutionary concept he had been perfecting since the 90s. HOT DOG (Hands Off The Dog) Training produces amazing off-leash control with virtually no corrections.

"Training is all a game," says Patton. "Dogs naturally understand our games because they coevolved with us and our children." Recent research by Professor Brian Hare at the Duke Dog Cognition Lab has shown that dogs much better understand the social gestures of humans than chimps and wolves, which are considered more intelligent.

The HOT DOG Method relies heavily on games and gestures, particularly pointing. "Dog and humans construct the most extraordinary symbiosis in all of nature," says Patton. He calls this relationship a "merger" in his book, which analyzes the amazing but negative impact this Pleistocene dream team has had on the planet. The book is currently being shopped to agents and publishers.
