James F. Orr, III Elected as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rockefeller Foundation
NEW YORK, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- James F. Orr, III, president and chief executive officer of United Asset Management Corporation (NYSE: UAM), has been elected to serve a five-year term as chairman of the board of trustees of the Rockefeller Foundation. He will succeed Alice Stone Ilchman, president emerita of Sarah Lawrence College, who is completing her Foundation board service this December. "Jim Orr is a superb manager and an incisive strategist who will help to maintain the Rockefeller Foundation board's focus on improving poor people's lives and livelihoods through the application of knowledge, science, technology, research and analysis," said Gordon Conway, president of the Rockefeller Foundation. "Jim brings a sharp-edged insight into some of globalization's critical challenges and will help guide the Foundation as we seek ways to redirect the currents of globalization to benefit the world's poor." Orr, 57, was named president and CEO of Boston-based United Asset Management in May. He has served on the Rockefeller Foundation board since 1995, and chairs the board's budget and compensation committee. He also serves on the Foundation's finance committee and previously chaired the nominating committee. From 1987 through 1999, Orr was chairman and chief executive officer of Portland, Maine-based UNUM Provident Corporation, one of the nation's leading providers of disability and other types of insurance. He has a long and accomplished career in the insurance and financial services industries. Orr began his career in banking and spent several years in the securities industry in New York and Boston. He has been a principal in a Boston-based investment firm and an executive vice president with Connecticut Bank & Trust Company, with which he worked from 1975 to 1986. Mr. Orr is actively involved in a range of community, charitable and industry activities. He is a trustee of Bates College, chair of the Maine Health Foundation, director of the Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education, and a member of the Harvard Center for Society and Health. He is also a member of the Conference Board, a member and past chairman of the National Alliance of Business, trustee of the Committee for Economic Development, director of Nashua Corporation and Maine Bank Corp. As Rockefeller Foundation chairman, Orr will lead the 16-person board of trustees in overseeing the Foundation's global grantmaking activities and overall Foundation management when his term begins on December 13. About the Rockefeller Foundation The Rockefeller Foundation's approach to current global challenges focuses on poor people's daily existence -- their lives and livelihoods -- and how the process of globalization can be turned to their advantage. The Foundation's program funding is focused and targeted among four "themes" that reflect the interconnected and intertwined themes of people's lives -- their health, food, work and creative expression. The Rockefeller Foundation has a long history of creating new knowledge by employing the most up-to-date tools of science and technology, and disseminating that knowledge to ameliorate human suffering. In the Foundation's past this method of using knowledge to focus on the root causes of problems, rather than their symptoms, has led to successes including the eradication of hookworm and the modernization of developing country agriculture known as the Green Revolution.
