With the announcement that Mayor Rob Poythress would be endorsing Madera County Sheriff candidate Jay Varney in the upcoming election, Varney gained a significant advantage over his opponents.

Poythress is currently serving a 4 year term as Madera Mayor, and is a native Maderan. As a respected and well-known public servant, it is likely that his endorsement will significantly strengthen Varney's bid for Sheriff.

In a statement indicating his support of Varney, Poythress has this to say: "Jay Varney is experienced in all matters of law enforcement and has held a number of leadership positions that I feel make him highly qualified for the position of Madera County Sheriff. His dedication to public service, his spirit of cooperation and his core values make him, in my estimation, the ideal candidate for this position. I am very proud to endorse Chief Varney."

Varney, who is currently serving as the Police Chief of Chowchilla, released a statement of gratitude for Poythress' endorsement, saying, "I am humbled by Mayor Poythress' endorsement. It means a great deal to know that I have the support of a someone that has led Madera the way that Mayor Poythress has. When elected, I will serve the citizens of Madera County with the same honor and dedication that Robert Poythress has served the City of Madera."

Varney does indeed have a strong background in law enforcement and leadership. Before beginning his ten-year tenure as the Police Chief of Chowchilla, he served in various capacities in police departments in Dallas, Texas and Lansing, Michigan. He has a strong educational background, earning an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, and is currently completing a graduate degree in criminology from Fresno State.

Varney's experience as Chief of Police has allowed him to oversee up to 19 officers, eight community service officers and two reserve officers.  Additionally, Varney spent almost two years overseeing the entire city as Acting City Administrator from 2009-2001.  Chowchilla is home to two state prisons, and has a population of 18,500.

Varney believes that his education and experience will serve him well as Sheriff, saying, "I have worked and led in just about every kind of environment. My combination of education and experience has the most to offer the citizens of Madera County in the coming years".
