Jewelers Turn to Internet after Theft
Open Artners Gallery to Sell Handcrafted Designer Jewelry Online
NEW YORK, Dec. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- New York City based Jewelry designer Keiko Mita and her husband John Speaks , owners of K.Mita Design, opened Artners Gallery (www.artnersgallery.com) last month to sell artisan designer jewelry and to promote contemporary jewelry designers online. Ms. Mita and Mr. Speaks founded the gallery after a jewelry theft earlier in the year decimated their business. According to the couple the opportunity to sell jewelry online is giving them a new lease on life.
Ms. Mita, who graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1992, said "we intend to sell fine art jewelry not only from K.Mita Design but also from many other artists who would like to expand their presence on the internet." Mr. Speaks added that they hope to fill the gap between fashion jewelry and craft jewelry. The couple also started a new Facebook page: www.facebook.com/artnersgallery.
Mr. Speaks said that Keiko was crushed when she discovered that their car was broken into when parked in what they thought was a secure area of a local storage company last spring. Several pieces of her jewelry had won international awards and many had been made years ago in Japan. The loss, which came to more than $300,000, has not deterred them from moving forward.
According to Mr. Speaks "the challenge will be to gain customers' confidence that the handcrafted designer jewelry we are selling is of the highest quality. Unlike similar sites we do not have a brick and mortar store where you can inspect the jewelry. We will run occasional promotions and advertise primarily online, but ultimately the test will be the quality and expertise of our artists – and our service."
Ms. Mita thinks that their background puts them in a unique position to open such a gallery: "we appreciate the hard work that goes into making fine art jewelry. Every step along the way, from the jewelry design to the selection of materials to the technique itself, is meticulously thought out and executed. The result is a work of art, designer jewelry that is always unique but never goes out of style."
K.Mita Design is familiar to people who frequent high-end juried craft shows on the East coast. For the last six years the firm has sold its jewelry at shows in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. It also has exhibited in San Francisco and Palm Beach. According to Ms. Mita they only do inside shows because of security concerns – an irony that is not lost on the couple.
Mr. Speaks said that they are going to focus most of their attention on Artners Gallery in the foreseeable future rather than continuing to participate in fine craft shows. According to Mr. Speaks, "it is very costly and time-consuming to participate in fine craft shows, and we have always wanted to work with other artists and to help promote the industry. Artners Gallery gives us that opportunity."
