John Jenkins Named Head Coach and General Manager and Mike Pede Named Team President of All American Football League's Texas Team
Jenkins and Pede bring deep Texas football roots to new team
HOUSTON, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The All American Football League today
announced the appointment of former University of Houston head football
coach John Jenkins as Head Coach of their Texas team. In addition, Michael
L. Pede was named President of the team. The appointments were announced by
Keenan Davis, the League's Vice President of Football Operations and
Business. Jenkins will also serve as Team Texas General Manager and
Offensive Coordinator.
A two-sport standout at the University of Arkansas, Jenkins has
assembled an impressive coaching resume spanning more than three decades at
the high school, intercollegiate and professional levels. At the University
of Houston where he started as Offensive Coordinator, Jenkins tied the mark
for most wins by a first-year head coach during a 10-1 season in 1990 and
at one point held the longest winning streak in the nation. Known for his
quick striking, entertaining brand of air attack, Jenkins has coached a
veritable "who's who" of quarterbacks and receivers who have enjoyed
outstanding professional playing careers. Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware
and David Klingler, both first round picks, and Jason Phillips, a 1989 All
America receiver, all played for Jenkins.
In addition to serving as the Houston Cougars head coach from 1990-92,
Jenkins held head coaching positions in the AFL (Arkansas Twisters) and CFL
(Ottawa Renegades) in addition to holding assistant positions in the USFL
(Houston Gamblers and New Jersey Generals) and other CFL clubs.
"Being a native Texan, and having coached high school, college and
professional football in Texas, I am honored to have the chance to be
General Manager and Head Coach of Texas in the AAFL," said Jenkins. "I will
pour my heart and soul into putting a class product on the field and in the
community for the people of Texas. Fans can anticipate a lot of no-huddle,
fast-break and, hopefully, quick-striking offense," he said.
Pede brings two decades of experience in intercollegiate sports
administration to his new position in addition to an in-depth knowledge of
the Texas marketplace. At the University of Houston, where he served as
Director of Marketing and as Associate Athletics Director of Rice
University, Pede developed and managed a wide range of marketing campaigns
and handled the operational aspects of sports events. He is a founding
co-partner of GameDay Consultants, a Houston-based marketing, media and
event management firm with sports and non-sports clients.
"I am excited to bring the AAFL brand of football to the Houston market
where I have worked in for 20 years," said Pede. "There is a deep passion
for football in this market and I know the fans are going to come out and
support their Big 12 and CUSA alumni. I am proud to say 'alumni' as the
players will all be graduates," he said.
The All American Football League is aligning with the passion for
college football and the year-round fan interest in the game's traditions
and rivalries. The League's spring schedule is designed to satisfy fans who
hunger for quality football between the NFL and college seasons. In
addition to Texas, the League's charter teams will be located in avid
college football markets with teams representing the states of Alabama,
Arkansas, Florida, Michigan and Tennessee.
In addition to tapping into the passion that exists for the college
game among former players and fans, another point of difference is the All
American Football League's player eligibility requirement. Players selected
by the League must have earned their Bachelor's degree in addition to
exhausting their college football eligibility.
