Jupiter Media Metrix Announces U.S. Top 50 Web and Digital Media Properties For September 2001
News sites take center stage in the wake of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks
Abparmacy.com follows X10.com pop-up ad strategy to break into the Top 50
ranking
NEW YORK, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Jupiter Media Metrix (Nasdaq: JMXI), the
global leader in Internet and new technology analysis and measurement, today
released the Media Metrix U.S. Top 50 Web and digital media property ratings
for September 2001. Among notable trends is the influx of traffic to news
sites, this month's top growth category. News sites were visited by
51 percent of online users in September 2001, up from 40 percent the previous
month.
"More than 50 million people visited news sites in September, helping to
increase overall online usage in a month where growth is usually flat due to
the shorter number of days," said Charles Buchwalther, vice president of media
research, Jupiter Media Metrix. "However, both the number of unique visitors
and the amount of time spent online in September increased significantly."
The increased usage of news sites, coinciding with the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks, is most evident among the major television news players. Cnn.com was
the top news site with 24.8 million unique visitors, up 141 percent from the
previous month. Average minutes spent per person on Cnn.com increased
39 percent, from 23.8 minutes in August 2001 to 33.0 in September. Msnbc.com
followed with 22.2 million unique visitors in September 2001, up 66 percent
from the previous month. Average minutes spent on Msnbc.com increased
46 percent, from 22.0 minutes in August 2001 to 32.1 in September.
While a few major news sites were responsible for the majority of the
growth within the category, traffic to smaller sites generally increased as
well. Moreover, 24 new news sites -- mainly affiliated with local television
stations and newspapers - broke the 200,000 unique-visitor threshold. One
notable site was Firehouse magazine's Firehouse.com, which offers news and
information on firefighting, EMS, rescue and safety. Firehouse.com had
540,000 unique visitors in September 2001.
Highlights of the September 2001 Digital Media Audience Ratings:
-- Top Newcomers -- This month's top newcomer -- any site that appeared in
the ratings for the first time and had a minimum of 600,000 unique
visitors -- was Abpharmacy.com, which also entered the Top 50 property
ranking at number 33 with 10.1 million unique visitors. The majority
of traffic to Abpharmacy.com was driven by pop-up ads. Many other
notable newcomers were driven by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks:
Doubtlessdesigns.net, a documentary-style photo essay, had 2.6 million
unique visitors; Tributetoheroes.org and Libertyunites.org, both
fundraising sites, had 2.1 million and 733,000 unique visitors,
respectively; Amrcorp.com, the site of American Airlines' parent
company, had 736,000 unique visitors; and Ifccfbi.gov, a joint site of
the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime
Center, had 865,000 unique visitors (see full chart below).
-- Top Gaining Properties -- The top three gaining digital media
properties according to their percent change in unique visitors between
August and September 2001 were: Homestore.com Network, which increased
93 percent to 14.2 million unique visitors; New York Times Digital,
which increased 86 percent to 10.4 million unique visitors; and
American Greetings, which increased 76 percent to 17.0 million unique
visitors. Homestore acquired traffic from former iPlace.com Sites; New
York Times Digital was boosted by the month's overall surge in traffic
to news sites; and American Greetings now includes traffic to
Bluemountainarts.com (see chart below).
-- Breaking Into the Top 50 -- In addition to Abpharmacy.com, notable
properties to break into this month's Top 50 ranking include: Real
Cities at number 45 with 8.0 million unique visitors; Tribune
Interactive at number 46 with 8.0 million unique visitors; and Knight
Ridder at number 47 with 7.9 million unique visitors. Traffic to these
three properties was driven largely by an influx of visitors to news
sites that exist within the properties.
