BOSTON, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Keane, Inc. (NYSE: KEA), a
leading business and information technology (IT) services firm, has been
selected to help upgrade the National Weather Service's (NWS) Advanced Weather
Interactive Processing System (AWIPS). With this contract, Keane will support
NWS, an agency of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),
as it continues to provide the world's best environmental prediction services.
The value of the deal to Keane is approximately $54 million over 10 years.
Raytheon Company, based in Waltham, Mass., was awarded the entire
contract, which is valued at approximately $300 million, with a five-year base
period and five one-year options. Raytheon selected Keane to provide
strategic IT, Application Outsourcing, and Testing services to AWIPS, a
nationwide operational weather data analysis and dissemination system.
A cornerstone of the modernized NWS, AWIPS is the computerized system that
processes and overlays multiple data sources to allow more than 100 local
weather forecast offices and river forecast centers across the United States
to generate weather and water forecasts and warnings. In modernizing the
software development and maintenance process, Keane enables NWS to reduce
defects before fielding AWIPS upgrades and to make the satellite
communications arm of AWIPS more flexible and expandable to accommodate a
growing stream of data.
Keane will develop a vigorous, sustainable architecture and will integrate
and maintain the software products developed at the various NWS labs to
support AWIPS' real-time processing system. Utilizing advanced technologies,
Keane will manage the AWIPS migration to an all-Linux environment built on Red
Hat Enterprise 3.0 and support the migration of AWIPS to an open-standards,
service-oriented architecture based on a Web services platform.
To reduce costs, as well as develop a more maintainable and sustainable
environment, Keane will help NWS redesign and streamline its testing
processes. The realized cost savings will be directed toward the continuing
modernization of other critical AWIPS applications and processes.
Keane will begin managing the software maintenance, integration, and
testing of AWIPS at Raytheon's Silver Spring, Md., facility effective October
In addition to its Application Outsourcing and Testing expertise, Keane
also brings a strong seven-year relationship with the NOAA to this engagement.
"Keane looks forward to continuing our relationship as a trusted partner of
NOAA," said Sumeet Shrivastava managing director, Keane Federal Systems, Inc.
"This contract will enable the NWS to significantly improve AWIPS's enterprise
software development and maintenance processes, and Keane is thrilled to
contribute to this important initiative."
