In announcing the award, Wine Enthusiast Magazine observed, "Korbel has achieved something few American wineries have -- not just longevity, but something even more elusive: supreme brand recognition. Indeed, the name 'Korbel' has become associated in the consumer's mind with reliability, trustworthiness and affordability, which are the main reasons why Korbel leads the premium sparkling wine category in America."
Wine Enthusiast Magazine created the annual Wine Star Awards to recognize leaders in the crafting, marketing and distribution of wine and spirits worldwide, and highlight achievements of the past year. Five wineries were nominated for American Winery of the Year in 2008. Joining Korbel as nominees were J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, Rodney Strong Vineyards, Shafer Vineyards and Sineann.
"To be chosen as American Winery of the Year is a rare honor and a
singular acknowledgment of everyone's efforts here at Korbel," commented
Wine Enthusiast Magazine has been a respected source of news and
information on wine, food, spirits, travel and entertaining since 1988.
