"Kremlin Speak: Inside Putin's Propaganda Factory" - new e-book by WSJ reporter probes Russia's disinformation campaign
CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y., Dec. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Russian President Vladimir Putin's effort to influence global opinion has taken on a more sophisticated and dark form. With state-backed English-language news broadcaster RT, the Kremlin has unleashed the same sort of propaganda campaign on the world it has used to deftly cultivate Putin's popularity at home, Wall Street Journal journalist Lukas I. Alpert, writes in Kremlin Speak: Inside Putin's Propaganda Factory, an e-book recently published by Tatra Press (available on Amazon.com: http://tinyurl.com/ppdkpsu).
As Russia's geopolitical and economic crisis deepens, Kremlin Speak explores how the Kremlin has used the internationally broadcast channel to insert its line into public debate, to at times incredulous effect. From the annexation of Crimea and invasion of eastern Ukraine, to the downing of a Malaysian passenger jet over Ukrainian territory, Alpert explains how RT rose to become Russia's most heavily funded news broadcaster and full-blown propaganda arm of the Kremlin.
Alpert follows RT's ascent from a fringe channel featuring low-quality programs on wildlife and folk culture to a major player reaching millions of viewers in more than 100 countries. The channel's $400 million annual war chest, Alpert writes, comes in exchange for dialing up pro-Kremlin and Anti-Western news coverage. While RT likens itself as an alternative to "Anglo-Saxon" international news, Alpert reveals it as little more than a slick disinformation machine.
Alpert's investigation draws on interviews with insiders and media pundits familiar with RT's inner workings. It also offers a blow-by-blow account of dissent within the channel, including the sudden on-air departures of some RT anchors claiming increasing pressure to present arguments they knew were untrue.
About the Author: Lukas I. Alpert was a Moscow-based correspondent for The Wall Street Journal for three years and has written for Playboy, The New York Post and New York Daily News. His coverage includes: the war in Ukraine, the Sochi Olympics, the trial of the Pussy Riot rock band and former CIA contractor Edward Snowden's flight to Russia. Alpert is now based in New York covering media for The Wall Street Journal.
