Laclede Gas to Improve Customer Convenience Through Its New Electronic ("e-bill") System

Nov 14, 2002, 00:00 ET from Laclede Gas Company

ST. LOUIS, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its continuing effort to
enhance customer service, Laclede Gas Company has fully implemented a
convenient, paperless, electronic billing or "e-bill" system. Laclede Gas is
sending information about the new e-bill system to customers in their November
Laclede Gas customers, including those of its Missouri Natural Gas
division, now are able to view and pay their monthly gas bills through their
choice of more than 650 web sites that include banks, brokerages, credit
unions, Internet portals and personal financial management software. For
customers enrolled in the e-bill system, Laclede Gas will post the customers'
bills through a secure connection with CheckFree, which makes the bills
available for review at the website of choice for each customer. Those who
enroll will receive an e-mail notification that the e-bills have been posted
-- rather than a paper bill -- so they can securely review their bill and
 schedule payment.
Laclede and Missouri Natural customers can begin managing their accounts
online by visiting to find out how they can enroll. Once
enrolled, customers can make their payments online and view the past
electronic bill statements for each month they have been enrolled, up to six
months. When they approve their monthly payment amount and schedule the
payment date, the payment is sent to arrive on time from their designated
bank, credit union or brokerage account.
The new service is made available through Laclede's relationship with
CheckFree i-Solutions, the leading provider of interactive e-billing and
e-statement software and services and part of CheckFree Corporation
(Nasdaq: CKFR). Unlike paper payments, customers who pay their bills
electronically through CheckFree are protected by the CheckFree Guarantee
against late fees resulting from processing delays, as well as liability for
 unauthorized transactions.
"This is another effort to provide our customers with convenient and
secure options to receive and pay their gas bills," said Richard N. Hargraves,
Laclede's Director of Corporate Communications. "With this service, our
customers can save time by viewing and paying their monthly gas bills from
their choice of Internet service sites. They don't need to write a check and
then find an envelope and stamps each month."
Laclede already offers customers these other payment alternatives:
-- With the Easy-Pay direct payment plan, customers can have their
checking or savings accounts automatically debited to pay their monthly
gas bills. Customers already paying their bills through Easy-Pay can
sign up to view their bills electronically and eliminate receiving
        their bills by mail.
-- Payments are accepted at 90 area supermarkets and grocers so customers
who wish to pay in person don't have to travel to Laclede Gas or
Missouri Natural Gas offices during business hours.
-- Gift certificates, in $25 denominations, are available from the Laclede
Gas payment office at 720 Olive in downtown St. Louis and by mail order
