BIRMINGHAM, Ala., May 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of HealthSouth Corporation (NYSE: HLS), the nation's largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, has named Leo I. "Lee" Higdon Jr. as non-executive Chairman of the Board, effective May 1, 2014. He will succeed Jon F. Hanson, who has served as a director of HealthSouth since 2002 and non-executive chairman of the board since 2005. In recognition of his long and outstanding service, his fellow directors have bestowed upon Hanson the title of chairman emeritus.

"During his tenure he has chaired the Compensation Committee and provided insightful leadership during the turnaround and repositioning of the company. Outside of HealthSouth, Higdon has had a long and successful career in executive leadership roles, including extensive financial services industry experience. He worked at Salomon Brothers for 20 years, where he became vice chairman and member of the executive committee, managing the Global Investment Banking Division. Most recently, he served as president of Connecticut College from 2006 until his retirement at the end of 2013. Prior to that, he served as the president of the College of Charleston for five years and the president of Babson College for four years before that. He also served as the dean of Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia from 1993-1997. Over the years, Higdon has served on a number of public company boards across varied industries.
