Lift Caregiving creates a sense of community for family caregivers with its #loveyourselfie campaign
RICHMOND, Va., March 12, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Lift Caregiving wants caregivers to share a picture of themselves with their loved one in the month of March as a part of the healthy image #loveyourselfie social media campaign. The goal of the campaign is to capture the happy moments in the caregiving journey and to combat the feeling of isolation commonly found in the family caregiving community.
Caregiver can feel like a lonely journey, with many caregivers finding much of their spare time spent caring for and tending to the needs of their loved one. This is an important consideration because loneliness and isolation can contribute to caregiver burnout and depression; in fact, a recent report from the National Consensus Development Conference found that "40% to 70% of family caregivers have clinically significant symptoms of depression with about a quarter to half of these caregivers meeting the diagnostic criteria for major depression."
Creating a space for community caregivers is Lift Caregiving's goal, and its #loveyourselfie campaign aims to bring caregivers together and showcase the brighter side of caregiving. "One family caregiver shared a photo she had taken while she and her husband Skyped with their son and grandchild. You could tell that both the caregiver and her husband were having great fun. It is so refreshing and helpful to see people embracing their role as caregiving and finding joy in the process," said Katie Gilstrap, co-founder of Lift Caregiving.
The campaign is called #loveyourselfie. Lift is asking caregivers to share their photos via social media and to use the campaign hashtag. At the end of the month Lift Caregiving will combine all of the #loveyourselfie photographs to create a unique caregiver photo mashup, as a way to show the vast number of people who play the role of family caregiver while also showing support for this important healthcare arm.
