SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Hosfelt Gallery, San Francisco's premier contemporary art gallery, today announced the opening of the Liliana Porter exhibit and the premiere of her newest video, Actualidades/Breaking News. In addition to the video, this exhibition showcases the full range of the Argentinian artist's work, including paintings, sculptural objects, installations, works on paper, and photographs. Over the years, Porter has amassed a prodigious and eccentric collection of figurines, knickknacks, toys, and souvenirs from her global travels. These kitschy objects, each representing a different era and cultural/historical narrative, invite political, philosophical, and existential interpretation through their incongruous combination in unexpected situations.
In her new video, Actualidades/Breaking News, Porter structures each scene as if it were a segment from a newscast or section in a newspaper, including "Arts and Leisure," "Fashion and Style," "World News," and "Religion." With music arranged and composed by Sylvia Meyer, each scenario becomes an evocative portrayal of the absurdities and tragedies perpetuated by poignant human surrogates in the form of shabby children's toys, hilarious religious and political icons, and other peculiar and pathetic mass-produced objects.
"One of the most important artists of our time, Liliana Porter channels the influences of magic realism and conceptual art into a unique, multi-media experience that is suffused with both humor and pathos through unexpected juxtapositions of mismatched tchotchkes," said Todd Hosfelt, owner at Hosfelt Gallery. "Her work in this exhibit challenges the proposition that time is linear and reality graspable."
The exhibition will open on Saturday, October 15, 2016 with a public reception for the artist from 4 to 6 pm, and can be seen at Hosfelt Gallery through November 23, 2016. The gallery is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10 am-5:30 pm, and Thursday 11 am-7 pm. Private appointments are also available by calling 415-495-5454. About Hosfelt Gallery
Founded 20 years ago in September of 1996, Hosfelt Gallery has distinguished itself as a pioneer, both in its consistent introductions of exceptional new artists from around the world, and its unconventional exhibition spaces. Hosfelt Gallery's trailblazing move to its current location established the nucleus of what is now San Francisco's newest and most vibrant arts district, DoReMi. With 9,000 square feet of sky-lit exhibition space in a former door factory, the gallery's integration of distinctive contemporary design with unaltered remnants of the building's prior function mirrors its programmatic emphasis on innovative expression born out of a deep understanding of social, political, and/or cultural history. In 2015, Hosfelt Gallery founded the first Digital Media Conservation Lab to address the growing need for the preservation of digital and electronic art in private and corporate collections. Hosfelt Gallery is a member of the Art Dealers Association of America. For information on current and upcoming exhibitions and artists represented, visit www.hosfeltgallery.com.
