Local Non-Profit Announces Collaboration With the Epilepsy Foundation Northwest
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, July 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Stone Soup Group (SSG), a statewide nonprofit organization providing support and assistance to families of children and youth with disabilities, has announced it will collaborate with the Epilepsy Foundation Northwest (EFNW) to support people with epilepsy in Alaska. The overall goal will be to help people with seizures participate in all life experiences while improving how people with epilepsy are perceived, accepted and valued in society.
It is estimated that one percent of the United States population, or nearly 7,000 Alaska residents, are living with epilepsy. Stone Soup Group, with the assistance of EFNW, a regional affiliate of the national Epilepsy Foundation, will work to educate the public about epilepsy, to encourage people with epilepsy to become self-advocates, and through local training and assistance, provide support to Alaskans who have epilepsy or care for someone who has the disorder.
"Epilepsy is a general term used for a group of disorders that cause disturbances in electrical signaling in the brain. When a person has two or more seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy," says Brent Herrmann, CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation Northwest. "We are honored that Stone Soup Group will help carry our programs and services to Alaskans with epilepsy and their families."
Traditionally known as the place to turn when families of children and youth with disabilities need help and don't know where to start, Stone Soup Group will continue to provide comprehensive help and support, with an eventual added capability to serve as the Epilepsy Foundation Northwest's Alaskan point of contact for individuals with epilepsy and their families who need assistance.
Stone Soup Group and the Epilepsy Foundation Northwest will offer a series of free educational workshops on epilepsy and seizures in Anchorage and Fairbanks this summer. Additional educational and advocacy related activities will be offered in the fall including a public outreach campaign aimed at creating awareness about epilepsy.
