LOS ANGELES, Aug. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, July 25th, 2015 the Los Angeles School of Gymnastics team of national-level gymnasts stepped onto the red carpet of the LA Coliseum to lead the 2015 Special Olympics Opening Ceremony as over 7,000 of the world's most inspiring athletes followed from their respective country and over 165 different nations came to celebrate the commencement of the 2015 World Special Olympics. This event was considered the largest event in Los Angeles since the 1984 Summer Olympic Games also known as the Games of the XXIII Olympiad. Following an introduction by President Barack Obama in front of a crowd of 62,388, the Los Angeles School of Gymnastics team comprised of over 35 of its best athletes kicked off the event as they tumbled down the red carpet on live television from all disciplines of the Summer and Special Olympics to include Rhythmic Gymnasts, Men's Gymnastics, Women's Artistic Gymnasts and Tumbling athletes reclaimed the attention that dated back to the 1984 Summer Olympic Games.
Alongside performers such as music legend Stevie Wonder and internationally acclaimed singer, Avril Lavigne who belted out her hits for the 1st time in public in over a year added by appearances from First Lady Michelle Obama and the hilarious Jimmy Kimmel, this was an event that told a story about Special Olympics but the role that Los Angeles School of Gymnastics has played in its development for over 32 years!
LASG's general manager Tanya Berenson told, "The World is coming to Los Angeles, but we are bringing to the world LA's 'Dream Team', a collaboration of Award-winning choreographer, Debbie Allen and Olympic history changing Coach, Mrs. Alla Svirsky together for another historic performance, combined with the world's leading performers, comedians, and spokespersons."
These top athletes and performers will continue the "Road to Rio" at the 2016 LA Lights Tournament of Champions, which Svirsky hosts to maintain a world class competition in the United States as rhythmic gymnastics is still predominantly led by the Eastern European block. This tradition continues strong into 2016 where over 400 athletes are slated to be in attendance including Olympians from previous Summer Games, those heading to the Summer Games.
The locally hosted international Tournament will be held from January 26-27, 2016, where athletes will set the battle for the playing field in front of an international panel of judges early in the competition season in preparation for the Olympic Trials that will be held in San Jose, CA July 8-10, 2016. Interviews and exclusives will be available to these athletes prior, during, and following the event as part of LASG's coverage of pre-Olympic events from January 24-28, 2016.
