LPI and NFPA Partner to Reduce Risks from Lightning
* In Support of National Lightning Safety Awareness Week, June 19-25, 2011
MARYVILLE, Mo., June 19, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) are joining forces to promote public awareness about lightning safety and lightning protection. The collaboration is part of LPI's educational initiative to remind the public and the fire safety community about the dangers of lightning, an underrated and often forgotten weather hazard. Partnerships with industry and nonprofit groups have helped LPI to better address lightning safety needs for life and property. LPI and NFPA will share resources and participate in promotions to support the National Weather Service's annual Lightning Safety Awareness Week campaign.
Lightning associated with thunderstorms and sometimes hurricanes can pose a variety of fire hazards. The massive power of lightning's electrical charge and intense heat can induce destructive power surges through home electrical systems, explode brick and roofing materials and ignite structural fires.
"Lightning is a dangerous and destructive force of nature capable of causing severe injury, death or extensive property damage," said Judy Comoletti, NFPA's division manager – public education. "We are excited to work with LPI on this educational initiative and believe that outreach with like-minded partners makes a difference in expanding safety and preparedness messages."
"NFPA has led the way in terms of lightning safety education and NFPA 780 (Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems), is a valuable resource for individuals who want to learn more about lightning protection principles and reducing lightning risks," said Bud VanSickle, LPI's executive director. "Lightning safety week is a perfect time to remind the fire prevention community of the critical role they can play to increase awareness about this preventable risk."
From June 19-25, 2011, lightning safety advocates will support National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. The National Weather Service launched an annual lightning safety campaign in 2001 to increase awareness about the dangers of lightning and provide the public with safety information to help protect families and property. More information about National Lightning Safety Awareness Week can be found at www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov.
NFPA is a worldwide leader in fire, electrical, building, and life safety. The mission of the international nonprofit organization founded in 1896 is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training and education.
LPI is a not-for-profit, nationwide group founded in 1955 to promote lightning safety, awareness and protection education. The organization provides a certification program to qualify competence in lightning protection installation, design and inspection. Visit the LPI website at www.lightning.org for more information.
