Marines Get Better Outdoor Light, and Cut Electricity by Half, at Camp Lejeune

SARASOTA, Fla., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Marines at Camp Lejeune, N.C. are seeing better at night, and cutting electricity usage by half, thanks to new LED roadway lights.

The new lights are EvoLucia(TM)-brand from Sarasota, FL-based LED manufacturer Sunovia Energy Technologies, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: SUNV).

Nearly 1100 metal halide and high-pressure sodium streetlights throughout Camp Lejeune roadways are being progressively replaced through the end of this year with 75- and 105-watt EvoLucia(TM)-brand LED luminaires, reducing energy just below 50% compared to the metal halide or high pressure sodium lights. Sunovia delivered the first of the 1092-piece order in mid-October. The new LED lights are cobra head in style and are mounted on existing roadway lighting poles, saving Camp Lejeune, and federal taxpayers, the cost of installing new poles.

The new LED cobra head luminaires are completely maintenance-free, requiring no lamp replacements for more than 12 years of nighttime use, dramatically reducing the high constant expense of replacing lamps and ballasts in older technologies.

The new LED luminaires project more than 50 lumens per watt consumed, a relatively high light output considering the low amount of input energy. They contain the newest high-brightness Cree(R) LEDs and employ Sunovia's patent-pending Aimed Optics(TM) technology to focus maximum light on the ground, virtually eliminating glare, wasted light and light pollution. Specialized cool color rendition allows for considerable visibility, and Camp Lejeune representatives noted that they are able to see colors of objects clearly in the LED light, which was much more difficult in the orange glow of the old metal halide fixtures.

Because the LEDs within Sunovia's EvoLucia-brand cobra heads are strategically aimed to precisely focus light for specified locations, they achieve higher light utilization (greater light output), providing higher "target efficiencies" than even other types of LED fixtures. This is particularly important in street and roadway applications, where increased road safety comes directly from the heightened visibility of more light reaching roadways at ground level. Sunovia's "Aimed Optics" technology is the only technology suited for direct, one-for-one replacement of HPS cobra head street lights.

The new cobra heads also exceed the "Fitted Target Efficiency" criteria established by the U.S. Department of Energy for Energy Star(R) certification. The "aimed optics" direct illumination method also allows the fixtures to meet Dark Sky guidelines and LEED certification requirements by minimizing light trespass, reducing sky-glow, and reducing the impact on nocturnal environments.

George Futrell of Graybar Electric Co, Inc. facilitated the sale of the EvoLucia cobra head lights to Camp Lejeune. Graybar Electric Co, a Fortune 500 corporation and one of the largest employee-owned companies in North America, is a leader in the distribution of high quality electrical, communications and networking products, and specializes in related supply chain management and logistics services. Through its network of more than 240 North American distribution facilities, it stocks and sells products from thousands of manufacturers, serving as the vital link to hundreds of thousands of customers.

"After reviewing the EvoLucia cobra head test reports and seeing the incredible performance the lights achieved at such a low input wattage, I knew they were the ideal solution for our customer, Camp Lejeune," says Mr. Futrell. "At Graybar, we always aim to provide the best possible products at the most competitive prices - and that is exactly what EvoLucia allowed us to do for Camp Lejeune."

Many cities throughout the country, including the city of Sarasota, are actively retrofitting high-watt, high-intensity discharge ("HID"), incandescent and even fluorescent lights with LEDs. Sunovia recently announced the award of a contract from Sarasota County to install EvoLucia LED cobra heads on Sarasota's main thoroughfare, Fruitville Road. Sunovia also completed an installation of its LED fixtures earlier this year in Fairview, TX.

Sunovia is currently seeking a General Services Administration (GSA) schedule, which would accelerate the company's government sales. Companies with GSA schedules are more attractive government vendors, as government employees may purchase up to $75,000 worth of goods directly from a GSA catalog without obtaining a competitive bid.
