Start-stop technology is designed to improve a vehicle's fuel economy by automatically shutting off the engine to preserve energy. When driving resumes, the engine restarts and allows the vehicle to continue on. During idle a vehicle wastes valuable energy and start-stop will reverse and eliminate that waste.

Ford reported that Fusion drivers with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine and start-stop technology would save an average of $1,100 more after five years than drivers of other midsize sedans. Drivers will not only save money, but time and fuel emissions.

In urban areas with heavy traffic, the Fusion should save up to 10 percent on fuel consumption, and average fuel efficiency should increase by around 3.5 percent. The technology should be a seamless transition for drivers and will improve multiple aspects of their lives.

Set to debut in the fall, the all-new 2013 Ford Fusion will be offered as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and traditional four-cylinder versions.
