Mars Area HS Student Wins Visions and Voices Best of Show, Eleven Students Receive Best of Category Honors at PTI

OAKDALE, Pa., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Students, friends, family members, and high school art teachers attended the 2010 opening of Visions and Voices, Pittsburgh Technical Institute's high school student show, Saturday, February 27, 2010, to see 603 pieces of work and learn which students received this year's honors.

This year PTI's show features the talents of 323 high school students from 89 high schools covering 6 states, and runs through March 26, 2010, at The Gallery at Pittsburgh Technical Institute.

"We are thrilled with the growth we've experienced in the eight years we've hosted this show," comments Susan Rosa, PTI Director of Visual Communication.  "To make this opportunity available to students, not only throughout our region but across Pennsylvania and in states as far away as Illinois, New York and New Jersey, is exciting and rewarding."

"It is impressive to see the range and depth of talent exhibited by these high school students," she continues.  "It is a testament to their talents and a reflection of the inspiration of their high school instructors."

This year, Visions & Voices honors 48 winners: 1 Best of Show, 11 Best of Category, 11 second place, 10 third place, and 15 honorable mentions as determined by an independent judges panel.

The 2010 PTI Visions and Voices Best of Show award goes to Gregory Leysens, a junior from Mars High School and Mars PA, for "Oblivious," a humorous charcoal rendering of a tree in a logging zone. "I think it is great that high schoolers have the opportunity to share their work," Leysens says. "A person gets some great ideas from looking at the work here."

Best of Category winners include students from 11 high schools: Derry Area, Dallastown, Cambridge Springs, Baldwin, Saegertown, Gettysburg, Bellwood-Antis, Brooke, Seneca Valley, LoGuidice Educational Center, and James Buchanan.

Justyne Obeldobel, of Colliers WV and a senior at Brooke High School, is the winner of the Fine Art 3D category. "It's my second year here and it amazes me even the second time around," she observes.

Me-Daya Blair, of St. Thomas PA and a junior at James Buchanon High School, Mercersburg, PA, is the second time winner in the Jewelry category. She comments, "I enjoy seeing everyone's work and the challenge that I set for myself every time."
