Mathematics simplified for children with new mobile apps
SYDNEY, June 21, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- A former university lecturer has introduced an amazing app that teaches children the principle of Digital Root (DR) in a fun way. Whizz-on-add is an excellent learning-based app that will help children master the art of addition and counting in a way never seen before.
Dr. Santha Fernandez, a former university lecturer in Australia, and now a Director of Fern & Dez Pty Ltd has, in collaboration with technology partners TechAhead, created an amazing application called Whizz-on-add, or Whizz for short, that provides a fun and visual experience of learning the principle of Digital Root. The principle involves adding the individual digits of any number greater than 9 in one or more consecutive steps until it is reduced to its single digit value (1 to 9). For example, the Digital Root of 59 is 5, derived as shown here:
59 = 5+9 =14, 1+4 =5
The principle is commonly used in numerology but it is also of tremendous use to schoolchildren as it can help them improve their performance and grades in mathematics.
Mathematics is indeed the language of nature and to the genius Carl Friedrich Gauzz, "Mathematics is the Queen of Sciences". The principles of Mathematics are relevant to our daily lives and are applied everywhere from internet banking, game development, even space shuttles and Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). Despite its overwhelming presence, this discipline of science evokes a lot of fear in the minds of several children. Hence, there is a need to simplify the learning of mathematics through the use of technology, which is the exact premise of this application.
Dr. Fernandez the architect of Whizz-on-add (see http://www.ferndez.com.au/about.html) , drew inspiration to develop this application after reading a newspaper article which noted that globally Australian year four school children were ranked 18th in mathematics. To her a key aspect in this discourse is to make children not fear mathematics and its learning and she believes that this can be done by embedding a sense of numeracy in everyday life, including exposure to mathematically based game apps that are fun.
The Digital Root principle as used inWhizz-on-add can be mastered by even a child as young as seven. Importantly, this same principle can be utilized by school children to quickly verify answers to mathematical problems (see http://www.ferndez.com.au/howtouse.html). No longer would Mathematics induce fear and loathing in the minds of children as this application will have them discover the unparalleled joy of being able to quickly derive digital roots with a tap of a finger and the visual delight of the "Flying Owl" to show their success.
Lite (free) and Pro (paid) versions of the app are available on:
