After high school, he became a makeup artist for Lanctme, then switched to fashion design-he graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and became a design assistant for Randolf Duke. But the self-proclaimed "product junkie" knew that makeup was his calling. Working on makeup teams for runway shows, he soon landed a job with master makeup artist, Kevyn Aucoin as his protege. As Aucoin's protege, Surratt's talent emerged quickly. Like Aucoin, he was able to interpret each woman's individuality and create a unique look for her.
