One of the beauty and fashion industry's brightest stars, Surratt brings
his passion for beauty, unique eye for fashion and expertise in new product
development to Maybelline New York's innovative color makeup.
"The challenge was finding someone who really met up with the brand's
needs," said Cheryl Vitali, Senior Vice President, Maybelline New York.
"We're this huge, American, iconic brand, and the diversity of women we appeal
to is critical to our success. We needed to find someone who had not only
made a name for themselves and done stunning work in the area of makeup
artistry, but who could actually translate that for women of all ethnicities
and socio-economic backgrounds. Troy's from the heartland, but has obviously
been quite successful as a New York-based makeup artist. He understands how
to translate that amazing New York style right back out there."
With this latest professional achievement, Surratt can certainly say he's
"not in Kansas anymore!" Raised on a farm in that heartland state, his
obsession with beauty was inspired by an Avon lady when he was 5 years old.
After high school, he became a makeup artist for Lanctme, then switched to
fashion design-he graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New
York and became a design assistant for Randolf Duke. But the self-proclaimed
"product junkie" knew that makeup was his calling. Working on makeup teams for
runway shows, he soon landed a job with master makeup artist, Kevyn Aucoin as
 his protege.
As Aucoin's protege, Surratt's talent emerged quickly. Like Aucoin, he was
able to interpret each woman's individuality and create a unique look for her.
Surratt also teamed up with entrepreneur Maureen Kelly to launch the cult,
indie beauty brand, Tarte. It was a success, but business took too much time
away from creativity; Surratt left in 2001 to focus on his editorial work and
celebrity clients, including a stint as spokesperson and makeup artist for the
 leading online beauty retailer,
"I love working with women," said Troy. "And to bring all the tips and
tricks and my knowledge of color to women everywhere -- on a global level --
was really appealing to me. I'm also excited to use my knowledge of product
 development and texture again."
In his new role as Maybelline New York Consulting Makeup Artist, Surratt
brings his innovative style to color, concepts and new product development.
His makeup artistry will be seen in international advertising campaigns with
Maybelline New York models Adriana Lima, Josie Maran, Tomiko Fraser, Erin
Wasson, Zhang Ziyi, Quiana Grant as well as actress Kristin Davis. As a
company spokesperson, he'll give expert advice to international publications
on makeup, application, colors and trends.
Surratt's credits include leading US and international fashion
publications such as W, Glamour, Cosmopolitan and Harper's Bazaar. His client
list includes: Hillary Swank, Charlize Theron, Neve Campbell, Mandy Moore,
Anjelica Houston, Julia Stiles, Gena Rowlands, Mary J. Blige, Kirstie Alley,
Thalia, Drew De Matteo, Marisa Tomei, Amy Smart, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen,
Hilary Duff, Janet Jackson, Amanda Bynes, Cynthia Nixon, Jessica and Kate
 Capshaw, Marsha Cross.
