MediaTek Drives Multiple Credence Sapphire NP Systems Into Asia Test Houses

Aug 24, 2004, 01:00 ET from Credence Systems Corporation

MILPITAS, Calif., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Credence Systems
Corporation (Nasdaq: CMOS) announced today that MediaTek, Inc. has prompted
several major subcontractors to purchase multiple Sapphire NP(TM) test systems
to meet its capacity demand. A leading supplier of consumer-use DVD player
controller chips and one of the world's top five fabless IC design companies,
MediaTek utilizes the systems for engineering development and production of
high performance computer and consumer circuits. Expanding on a seven-year
relationship with Credence, MediaTek selected Sapphire NP because of its
proven ability to reduce cost-of-test by up to 60 percent. Additionally, the
combination of Sapphire NP parallel and multi-site capabilities provides
MediaTek with the high throughput and yield optimization required for
 production test.
Explosive growth in the DVD market has increased video equipment sales in
the U.S. by greater than 37 percent and has driven IC demand. At the same
time, intense competition has reduced the ASPs for DVD devices. To meet these
intense market pressures, MediaTek required a highly flexible test solution
that enables concurrent testing of both analog and digital signals as well as
provides the most cost-effective test for combination CD-DVD applications.
Sapphire NP also allows MediaTek to standardize on a single platform from
 engineering through production, speeding time-to-volume.
"Sapphire NP offered the next-generation technology that not only gave us
a measurable engineering productivity boost but also delivered immediately
more than a 30 percent cost-of-test reduction that no other ATE vendor could
match," said David Yang, director of manufacturing engineering division,
MediaTek. "We anticipate lowering the cost-of-test by up to 60 percent
resulting from Sapphire NP's multi-site test capabilities, its low-cost
infrastructure and state-of-the-art software. Sapphire NP's easily
configurable, scalable architecture gives us the flexibility we require in
 wafer sort and final test."
"MediaTek designs chips for the consumer market that combine strong
digital performance and complex analog capabilities and Sapphire NP is unique
in offering the speed, accuracy and flexibility needed to test these ICs,"
said Dr. Graham Siddall, Credence's chairman and chief executive officer. "We
look forward to continuing our long-standing relationship with MediaTek and
working with them to reduce the cost-of-test across their operation."
     About Sapphire NP
Sapphire NP is the next-generation ATE based on the NPower(TM)
architecture and XTOS(TM) (eXtendable Test Operating System) software. In a
radical departure from traditional "big iron" testers, Sapphire NP offers
supreme configuration flexibility with test capabilities optimized from DC to
multi-gigahertz -- digital and analog, structural and functional -- with fully
encapsulated instruments that can be inserted into any slot in the test head.
Engineered with simplicity and cost efficiency in mind, Sapphire NP provides a
highly integrated, small footprint system with reduced power requirements. Its
high-bandwidth bus provides advanced communications and precise
synchronization between instruments, enhancing performance in any
configuration. Sapphire NP is readily adaptable to a wide range of performance
requirements from the characterization of high performance devices to low cost
requirements for production -- for IDMs, fabless companies, and
     About MediaTek
MediaTek Inc. is a leading provider of total solution for optical storage
and digital consumer semiconductor. Founded in 1997 and headquartered at
Hsinchu Science Industrial Park, Taiwan, MediaTek is now one of the world's
top 5 IC fabless companies and the world's largest chipset supplier of CD-ROM,
 DVD-ROM, CD-RW, Combi and DVD player. MediaTek's patent-pending, progressive
scan algorithm: MDDi(TM) (Media Direct De-Interlacing) technology delivers
superior video quality to the end users. The MDDi(TM) technology utilizes an
intelligent link between MPEG decoder and embedded progressive scan processor.
It can reproduce the most accurate pictures from DVD movie discs. DVD players
that contain the MDDi(TM) technology can be identified from the MDDi(TM) logo
on the product. The Company's common stock is traded on the Taiwan Stock
Exchange under the code "2454". For more information, please visit the
