Medical Practices Finding New Ways to Utilize, Reward Key Staff

In what seems to be a slow-evolving economic recovery and myriad new mandates from the Affordable Care Act, medical practices nationwide have readjusted and reevaluated their staffing levels. That often means new roles for current employees, accompanied by more tasks, but not necessarily an increase in salary. So how do medical practices retain quality employees without being able to offer financial incentives?

Appearing online and in the May 2014 issue of Physicians Practice, the report examines ways medical practices can maximize staff roles and responsibilities while rewarding them for excellence outside of traditional raises.

The annual Staff Salary Survey explores national and regional salary data for 10 key medical practice staff functions, including front-desk staff, medical assistants, physician assistants, and medical billers; providing practices with benchmarks to see if their employee pay rates match what their peers are compensating their staff.

While salary numbers fluctuated up or down depending on responsibility, one thing was apparent by nearly two-thirds of this year's respondents, representing nearly 1,400 medical practices nationwide: There won't be extra pay for those on staff this year.

According to the 2014 Staff Salary Survey, 71 percent said they don't plan to give raises — beyond cost of living increases — this year. Why?

  • 58 percent said decreasing reimbursements by payers and patients
  • 16 percent said other medical practice necessities
  • 13 percent cited the national economic climate
  • 4 percent said IT investments for their practices

So without pay raises in sight, it's more important than ever that medical practices find ways to retain the quality employees they have for today's challenges and those ahead.
