Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard to Attend the New York Academy of Sciences Gala on Sustainable Cities
MEXICO CITY, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The government of Mexico City today announced that Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard will attend the New York Academy of Sciences 6th Annual Science & the City Gala this evening. This year's event, which celebrates scientific excellence in the New York area, will pay special tribute to individuals who are working to create "Sustainable Cities."
"Cities are on the front lines in the fight against climate change, and it is essential to recognize and support local efforts to address this global issue," said Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard. "I am extremely pleased to attend this prestigious event recognizing the importance of the development of sustainable cities."
The Academy's Gala will feature renowned scientific leaders, including numerous Nobel laureates and many talented young researchers.
Mexico City, which is an active member of C40 Cities - Climate Leadership Group, a group of world cities promoting action and cooperation on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, is now investing more than $1 billion a year on environmental-related infrastructure and implementing sustainable environmental programs and practices.
Mexico City's Climate Action Plan, launched by Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard, is focused on making Mexico City the most environmentally-conscious and sustainable city in the world. The 15-year plan is designed to reduce transportation-related emissions; conserve public lands through major reforestation projects; encourage businesses to adopt sustainable environmental practices; invest in critical environmental infrastructure such as water management systems and recycling centers; and implement reforms regarding the disposal of solid waste.
