Miami Entrepreneur Targets Childhood Obesity with Superfits: a Crusade to Fight Fat
MIAMI, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- A few years ago, after Ivette Cortiella
reached 200 pounds, she knew it was time to take dramatic action.
It didn't take much effort to realize she wasn't alone. After extensive
research on the growing obesity epidemic, notably among America's children and
teens, Ivette changed her own lifestyle, lost 70 pounds, and started a company
with a precise mission: fight fat.
Cortiella's personal experience prompted her to found Superfits
(http://www.superfits.net), crusading to heighten awareness about the dangers
of being overweight - and provide solutions to help people change their
lifestyle and attain a healthy weight. She says, "The primary goal of
Superfits is to introduce the healthy lifestyle concept to children ages 5-17.
We also designed programs for adults to help them get back into a 'healthy'
mode.
"I know my approach works," continues Cortiella, company President and
CEO. "I spent years engaged in unhealthy eating habits and lacked the
motivation to exercise. But I'm proof that once you're committed to tackling
the problem, my multi-tiered approach can have positive results. Best of
all, it's a strategy that involves the entire family and is home-based."
Obesity: A Growing Epidemic
In the last 30 years, the number of overweight children in the U.S. has
doubled. About 30 percent of children ages 6-19 are overweight, and of these,
15 percent are obese. Studies show that excess weight in childhood is an
indicator of obesity in adulthood. Childhood obesity can lead to such physical
problems as heart and circulatory diseases, high blood pressure, sleep
disorders, diabetes, and orthopedic issues. Not as obvious - but just as
serious - children who are teased about their weight may develop more serious
eating disorders, low self-esteem and clinical depression. Besides the
personal price, obesity-related issues cost billions of dollars in medical
care and lost wages.
A Multi-Tiered Approach
Cortiella quotes experts who say that a key first step to addressing the
issue is for parents to recognize the problem. Then they should partner with
their children in a balanced program of diet, exercise, behavior modification,
and, if prescribed by a doctor, use supplements and prescription drugs.
Ongoing positive reinforcement is crucial.
Superfits' unique educational focus targets parents, children and health
care professionals, with an emphasis on overall lifestyle changes for the
whole family. Through its website, Superfits offers a wealth of nutrition,
exercise and lifestyle information, along with home fitness programs
like "Little Kickers" for ages 5-12, and "Teen Heat" for ages 13-17. Both
programs include packages of videos, multivitamins, meal plans/menu guides,
posters, and reminder wristbands. T-shirts and backpacks with Superfits logos
are also available.
Superfits is also seeking to extend its reach nationally through media,
corporate, agency and school sponsorship opportunities. Upcoming events
include educational booths and appearances by Superfits' mascot, Healthy
Harry, at the Total Health & Fitness Expo on April 23 in Coconut Grove and
the Health & Fitness Expo in Miami Beach on April 29-30. More information on
Superfits events can be found at http://www.superfits.net/events.php.
Cortiella is living proof that each of us has a beautiful swan within.
Armed with a strategic plan, attitude modification, and ongoing positive
reinforcement, even children can see results that will translate into a
longer, healthier, happier lifetime.
