More and More Hollywood Producers are Casting Online
Headshot Photos are the Key For Actors to Get Found
NEW YORK, Jan. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- 2013 seems to be the year that professional actors are moving online.
It's a new world for today's acting industry. Gone are the days when actors stood in long lines for hours in Hollywood open casting calls. Instead, producers are turning to to sites like Casting Networks, New York Castings, and Actors Access to fill audition schedules in New York and Los Angeles. "It is true that casting directors will call actors out of their own rolodex first," says award-winning photographer Steven De Castro, "but the next generation of movie and theater stars will be discovered online."
With the benefits, also come new challenges. Says De Castro: "The only way to get the audition is for the director to click on your profile. And what attracts someone to your profile is your headshot.
Steven De Castro of K Light Studios has photographed actors who have appeared in major Hollywood movies, as well as the New York stage. Since he is a filmmaker himself, De Castro understands what directors are looking for when casting for a film or TV show. When asked what advice he would give when choosing a headshot photographer De Castro says,
"Don't go for a fashion photographer. Directors HATE airbrushed photos that look like they come out of magazine! Fashion photographers pose models to conceal whatever they think is unattractive. But directors don't buy it. You can't hide in a motion picture what you can hide in a photo. A director seeing the photo must be able to imagine what the actor would look like moving in three dimensions."
Instead, says De Castro. "The best headshot shows a unique individual in a natural pose."
All this emphasis on headshots can make actors a little nervous. What if you are not cover-girl material? De Castro says that it is a misconception to think that online casting is all about looks. "Directors are looking for all types whether young, old, skinny or fat. They already have a vision for the role you are applying for. So it's not a beauty contest. That's why my photos don't conceal what is unique or unusual about the actor, they celebrate it."
De Castro, who owns K Light Studio in New York, is seeing a 100% increase in appointments for actor headshots since the year began. "Actors are bypassing agents and getting their auditions online. And investing in the headshot is the way to get your foot in the door."
