The Power of Children: Making a Difference Exhibit
The Power of Children: Making a Difference, the newest permanent
exhibit at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, will open to the public
on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, sharing the extraordinary stories of Anne
Frank, Ruby Bridges and Ryan White - three children whose stories teach us
about overcoming obstacles to make a difference in the world.
In this powerful 12,000-square-foot exhibit, museum visitors will be
able to imagine the brutal realities these children experienced. Visitors
will learn about Anne Frank and reflect upon what it must have been like to
hide for two years from Nazi soldiers during World War II. Visitors can
visualize being 6-year-old Ruby Bridges, who was surrounded by Federal
Marshals as she walked through an angry mob to integrate a new school. Or,
visitors can imagine being a teenager named Ryan White and contracting a
disease which was so new that many people weren't even aware of what it was
and how it was spread, so they were afraid to be near him.
As visitors enter the exhibit, they will walk through a 30-foot tall
"Tree of Promise" where their journey begins. Recreated, historically
accurate environments reflect a special place where each child spent time,
including the Secret Annex where Anne Frank spent two years in hiding from
Nazi soldiers; the first-grade classroom in which Ruby Bridges spent an
entire school year with only her teacher, and eventual friend, Mrs. Henry;
and Ryan White's bedroom, filled with the items from his friends and the
celebrities who took on Ryan's cause. , all donated by his mother Jeanne
White-Ginder. First-person interpreters, live theater and real artifacts
will make it possible to become fully immersed in their lives. For more
