NASA, Hampton and NOAA Host Earthfest 2009 at Nature Park
HAMPTON, Va., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the leaves all around us are about to go orange, yellow and red, NASA Langley Research Center is still thinking "green."

The scientists at Langley are committed to understanding Earth, its atmosphere and its changing climate. In that spirit, NASA Langley, City of Hampton and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will host EarthFest 2009 at Sandy Bottom Nature Park on Sat., Oct. 24, 2009. The event -- 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. -- will focus on the amazing things about our planet, and the challenges we face in preserving it.
EarthFest is a daylong celebration, with exhibits, entertainment and activities indoors and outdoors, rain or shine. All speakers, exhibits and activities are free and open to the public.
Families, adults and kids can look through a solar telescope, see weather balloon demonstrations and play with the Magic Planet, a 3-D projection of Earth on a globe, packed with fascinating details about the planet's weather and climate. See how NASA science serves society and how climate change has been measured by students right here in Hampton Roads.
U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye will be on hand to give City of Hampton Parks and Recreation an award. Learn the difference between "good" ozone and "bad" ozone. Learn from NOAA scientists about "350 Day," designed to highlight the need to get the global concentration of carbon dioxide back under 350 parts per million, the level needed to ward off significant climate change.
Hands-on activities: measure your carbon footprint; dig for "dinosaur bones;" nature walks with Peninsula Bird Watchers at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; solar telescope with Virginia Peninsula Astronomy; Magic Planet 3-D globe; observe clouds with NASA scientists; make flounder masks with the Virginia Zoo.
Exhibits: "French Fry Car" that runs on vegetable oil; Hydrogen Car; learn how to conserve water and plant your own garden; meteorology and weather data from NASA and NOAA; NASA Earth and Science games for kids, indoors.
Arts and crafts: Paint on a giant canvas with the Peninsula Fine Arts Center; make masks with the Virginia Zoo.
Entertainment: Flute Frenzy show in the afternoon; live music throughout the day.
