NASP Launches Student Interest Groups for Careers in Specialty Pharmacy

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The National Association of Specialty Pharmacy (NASP) launched student interest groups (SIGs) for members currently enrolled in an accredited pharmacy program. The SIGs promote interaction and dialogue with peers, free access to Specialty-based education programs and career opportunities.

"Specialty is the future of pharmacy and one of the fastest growing sectors in the healthcare field," Gary M. Cohen, BSPharm, RPh, CSP, NASP, CEO, said. "Current students need additional education to understand the role they will play as they graduate and seek positions within the field. We are excited to provide free education to students looking to expand their careers and contribute to the growth of the Specialty sector."

Through NASP, SIG participants use a powerful online community tool to network and learn from peers. NASP's online community, live events and free subscription to the Specialty Pharma Journal also give students valuable access to manufacturers, payers, specialty pharmacy leaders, GPOs, and other industry stakeholders.

Student members, like other NASP members, receive complimentary access to the Specialty Pharma Education Center (SPEC), NASP's online education portal with 170 hours of content in 20 therapeutic categories. Colleges of Pharmacies in the United States, Roosevelt University for example, have already incorporated SPEC content into the curriculum.  SPEC also provides education needed to earn and maintain professional certification through the Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board (SPCB).

"As an organization, NASP is developing and offering innovative programs that focus on the unique needs of the Specialty Pharmacy community," George E. MacKinnon III, PhD, RPh, FASHP, Founding Dean and Professor, College of Pharmacy, Roosevelt University, said. "We look forward to working with NASP to promote and expand its educational offerings for our students, in particular those programs that prepare our graduates for the emerging model of specialty pharmacy practice."

Colleges of pharmacies are also eligible for NASP members under the corporate member structure. Students, deans or faculty can access more information about NASP membership online at www.nasprx.org
