GARDEN CITY, N.Y., Nov. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) Foundation donated $20,000 to support the Nassau County Police Department Police Youth Academy program that is designed to give high school students an opportunity to experience the many roles of police officers in their communities.

The Police Youth Academy brings students from Nassau County School Districts to the Police Academy for a one-day modified academy.  The purpose of the Youth Academy is to expose young people to police work, establish a positive relationship between the Police Department and young adults, and enhance responsible citizenship.

"We are very grateful for the support of the NCPD Foundation in helping us expand this important program," said Police Commissioner Thomas Dale. "Prior to the support of the Foundation we were only able to host high-risk schools as directed by a grant, now we can offer this essential program to all Nassau County School Districts which will be extremely beneficial for the community."

The Police Youth Academy was started in 2007 and hosts three to four schools each year. The session consists of classroom lectures, physical training, defensive tactics, police demonstrations as well as obstacle course exercises. At the end of the day, the youth have a greater understanding and respect for the members of the Police Department.

"Building relationships between young adults and the Police Department is critical for public safety" said Eric Blumencranz, Chairman of the NCPD Foundation. "We believe in the importance of this community program and wanted to make sure that it could be offered to all students in Nassau County as we see the remarkable effect it has on teaching students about law enforcement and the impact of their choices."

The NCPD will be hosing the Wantagh School District this Saturday at the NCPD Police Academy in Massapequa Park thanks to this donation by the NCPD Foundation.
