National Medal of Honor Day: Pappy Boyington Field Film
WWII hero remembered on National Medal of Honor Day
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- PAPPY BOYINGTON was the leader of the famed BLACK SHEEP SQUADRON VMF-214 in the Pacific during WWII. He was an ACE Fighter Pilot, Prisoner of War, and recipient of the MEDAL OF HONOR. PAPPY BOYINGTON was a hard-living, hard-fighting man, and he chronicled his story after WWII in his best-selling book "BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP." The book would later become the basis for a popular television series in the 1970s, which starred Hollywood icon ROBERT CONRAD as PAPPY.
KEVIN GONZALEZ is a first-time filmmaker and former Marine. Intrigued by the controversy, he decided to document the story as it unfolded in the community. "The MEDAL OF HONOR is a rare award. How many small towns can say that a MEDAL OF HONOR recipient was born here? I couldn't understand why this proposal to honor a WWII hero would be so controversial." The film tells the story of the grassroots effort by veterans to honor this WWII hero in the town of his birth, with a commemorative airfield naming in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
The documentary presents biographical information about BOYINGTON, as well as personal insights by some who knew him, actor ROBERT CONRAD, and PAPPY'S son GREG BOYINGTON JR., LtCol-USAF (Ret.). The personal stories of veterans involved in the campaign are weaved into the film, as background to show how people feel about a MEDAL OF HONOR recipient.
In addition to film festivals, it has been featured at aviation events like the world-famous EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH AIRSHOW. The documentary has been shown on many military bases around the country, as a free event for the troops and their families. It was honored to be included in the Veterans Day events at the U.S. NAVY MEMORIAL in Washington, DC.
PAPPY BOYINGTON FIELD is a 65-minute documentary film. It also includes a Bonus Features section:
- Tour of the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum in San Diego
- The Pappy Boyington Memorial Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit
- Director's outtake scenes
