National State Teachers of the Year Applaud NEA Commission Report Accomplished teachers praise vision outlined in Transforming Teaching
WASHINGTON, Dec. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The National State Teachers of the Year (NSTOY) leadership team, comprised of teacher leaders recognized for excellence in the classroom, is encouraged by the recent National Education Association (NEA) report, "Transforming Teaching."

The newly revitalized NSTOY organization has developed a robust strategic plan to transform teaching practice through differentiated roles for teachers, provide increased focus on student achievement, and include the voice of accomplished teachers in the education reform debate.
NSTOY is in agreement with the NEA that there needs to be significant improvements in educator professional development.
"In many schools and districts across the country, teachers are handed the keys to their classrooms on the first day of school and then spend the entire year in a room with a closed door and little colleague interaction during teaching hours," said Marguerite Izzo, New York State Teacher of the Year 2007. "If all students are to have access to highly effective teachers who would equip them with the skills necessary to navigate a rapidly changing world, then America's schools must do more than change. It's time to transform schools and increase equity while elevating student learning to the levels of deep knowledge, creativity, collaboration and problem-solving required in the 21st century. We believe that this can be accomplished by restructuring the staffing models currently defined in many schools."
NSTOY believes that by differentiating roles and responsibilities for career advancement, more talented teachers will be recruited and retained thereby increasing effective teaching.
NSTOY is encouraged by the NEA's willingness to address compensation based on skills, assignments and effectiveness that will provide an important opportunity to recognize teachers who strive every day to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population.
