National Stuttering Association Congratulates Lazaro Arbos of American Idol
Twenty-one-year-old stutterer Lazaro Arbos, Florida native, has become an American Idol fan favorite overnight.
NEW YORK, Jan. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The National Stuttering Association, the largest self-help organization in the world for people who stutter, extends its heartfelt congratulations and a sincere appreciation to Arbos for his genuine and honest representation of stuttering on national television.
This is the first time that American Idol -- now in its 12th season - has chosen a contestant that openly stutters. Arbos, a Cuban immigrant, has drawn much attention with both the severity of his stutter, and his astounding talent.
"We are beyond thrilled to have this young man representing those who stutter in a national forum like Idol, showing a world that knows little about stuttering, that it does not have to dictate who you are. It is not how you speak that matters, but what you have to say, and the NSA stands behind that message wholeheartedly," says NSA Executive Director, Tammy Flores.
The NSA has been providing hope, empowerment, encouragement, and support to people who stutter, their families, and the professionals that serve them for over 35 years. It also serves as a primary provider of education and information about stuttering.
Stuttering is a neurophysiological speech disorder that is widely misunderstood and affects more than 3 million people in the U.S. alone. It is a unique and variable speech disorder marked by prolongation of sounds, repetitious speech, and blocking (absence) of sounds, often accompanied by physical behaviors such as blinking, facial tension, or other behaviors used to "break free" from a disfluency.
"The fact that the Lazaro Arbos has the opportunity to showcase his talent while generating opportunities for stuttering education and awareness is amazing. We hope to see Lazaro at the NSA conference in Scottsdale this July." says NSA Board Member Samantha Gennuso.
The NSA hosts more than 100 local support chapters across the country, an Annual Conference (hosting an average of 700+ participants each year), one-day professional and family events, as well as cutting edge research literature and an active media presence.
