New Tanning Salon Chain Already Giving Back
Two young entrepreneurs prove that doing good transfers into doing well
BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The newest business on University Hill, Aspen Tan, is the next location in a small chain co-owned by University of Colorado alum Adam Lang. Lang and his business partner, Peyton Peeples, intend to prove that doing good transfers into doing well. In addition to bringing a new level of technology and professionalism into the tanning industry, Lang and Peeples are part of a new generation of small business entrepreneurs who are actively focused on making a positive impact in their communities. They're trying to "get it right" early on in Aspen Tan's journey to expansion. Recently, Aspen Tan set a goal to donate $10,000 to local charities in the next 12 months; "We've been blessed by the communities and wonderful customers that have enabled us to expand to 4 locations in 3 short years. We know that $10,000 won't save the planet; we just want to do our part in giving back to the communities that have done so much for us," explains Peeples.
Between the new location on the hill and the existing location in the 29th Street Mall, Aspen Tan now employs 12 current University of Colorado students and 2 alumni. To give the staff extra motivation to stay focused on succeeding in school, Aspen Tan offers a $50 bonus to every employee who makes the Dean's List at semester end. Peeples says, "Growing as fast as we have, management of our employees has quickly become one of our biggest priorities. We try to keep everyone motivated to be their best, as well as enjoy what they are doing. It's been really fun to help our employees apply what they're learning in school to the real business world. We encourage them to be part of the creative process and give us suggestions on how to reach the college market – because of this they have become a major asset to the team."
Aspen Tan was founded at the end of the economic recession in 2009 by two young entrepreneurs, Lang, 29, and Peeples, 31. They were inspired by a dream, and luckily, naive enough to ignore the fact that the national economy was an ominous cloud hovering above new businesses. After opening the first business in Aspen in May of 2009, and expanding to Glenwood Springs in December of 2010, Lang and Peeples were eager to see if their business model would be successful in a larger market. With both Lang and operations consultant Whitney Wickes familiar with the city of Boulder as Leeds School of Business alumni, Aspen Tan set its radar on opening its third salon in Boulder in the fall of 2011. Just a year later, the 2012 Boulder Daily Camera Gold Awards named Aspen Tan as "Boulder's Best Tanning Salon" and "Best New Business." The new tanning salon at 1352 College Ave is the fourth location for this growing chain.
Lang and Peeples attribute Aspen Tan's success over the past 4 years to its ability to connect with its communities. Lang says "We are trying to revitalize the outdated image of the tanning industry. We are a company focused on supporting a healthy lifestyle through educating customers about the benefits of Vitamin D in addition to boosting self-confidence on the outside. There's more to tanning than its superficial facade, and that's what we're trying to prove. We care about everyone that walks through our door, and we make sure our customers know it."
