North Carolina's Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Offer Scholarships to Summer Basketball Camps
Middle-school students encouraged to apply by the March 30 deadline
RALEIGH, N.C., March 19, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The deadline for students to apply for a Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship sponsored by North Carolina's electric cooperatives is quickly approaching. The scholarships will send 52 middle-school students to basketball camps at the University of North Carolina and N.C. State this summer. Applications must be submitted by March 30.
"The Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship experience has proven to be unforgettable for students year after year," said Lindsey Listrom , community relations specialist for the North Carolina Association of Electric Cooperatives. "We're proud to continue this tradition of giving outstanding kids the chance to learn from championship-winning coaches on college campuses."
Young men can apply to attend the Roy Williams Basketball Camp at UNC in Chapel Hill from June 16-20. Young ladies can apply to take part in the Kellie Harper Women's Basketball Academy at N.C. State in Raleigh from June 24-27.
Roy Williams , a two-time ACC Coach of the Year, has led the Tar Heels to two NCAA championships and three Final Fours in nine seasons. Kellie Harper is in her third season with the Wolfpack Women and was the 2007 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. Both coaches will work directly with the campers to improve fundamental skills that will benefit the young athletes on and off the court.
To apply, students must be in the sixth, seventh or eighth grade during the 2012-2013 school year. Applicants must have permission from a parent or guardian to attend the overnight camp and must provide their own transportation to and from the camp if selected to attend.
Applications and more information can be found at www.ncelectriccooperatives.com/community, or by contacting your local electric cooperative or Lindsey Listrom at (800) 662-8835. Applications will be judged on academics, extra-curricular activities and an essay. Winners will be announced by May 1.
