Novatel Networks Replaces MySQL with VoltDB's High-Speed Operational Database Global Wholesale Telecommunications Services Provider Deploys VoltDB to Accelerate VoIP Call Routing and Drive Down Costs
BEDFORD, Mass., May 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- VoltDB today announced that Novatel Networks, an international wholesaler of telecommunications services for enterprises, call centers and service providers, has deployed the high-speed NewSQL database in its data center. VoltDB displaced MySQL as the enabling technology for Novatel's carrier-grade VoIP call routing, delivering the high-velocity data ingestion, transactional capabilities and scale required to make routing decisions in real time based on very complex incoming data.
Many Fortune 500 companies, international tier one service providers, enterprises and contact centers rely on Novatel's carrier-grade platform for their most critical infrastructure, applications and cloud services. From robocalls for elections to customer support calls for the Affordable Health Care Act, Novatel processes millions of calls per day. It terminates and originates domestic and international call traffic through bilateral agreements between its own and other carrier networks. The company's flexible infrastructure, combined with multiple carrier choices, allows for customization unique in the telecommunications industry.
"Our system was initially architected with MySQL, which presented a major operational burden and offered limited scale," said Ari Gorman, CTO, Novatel Networks. "VoltDB is a fault tolerant database that enables us to manage extreme velocity data streams and call volumes. We are getting incredible performance with VoltDB that isn't possible with more traditional systems. As a result, we are able to deliver a remarkably competitive on premise and Cloud-based, high-capacity SIP solution."
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) call routing is the common protocol for routing VoIP calls. It is designed to set up real-time multimedia sessions between groups of participants and can be used for video and audio multicast meetings. VoltDB is queried to return least-cost SIP call routing results based on the number dialed after going through a procedure to determine the least cost route. This machine-to-machine activity results in millions of transactions and allows Novatel to pick the lowest cost carrier and route calls tens of thousands of times per second.
"The telecommunications industry must walk a fine line between managing the increasing complexity of its infrastructure, providing consistently high-quality service, and offering least-cost options," said Bruce Reading, VoltDB CEO. "Novatel's deployment is an excellent illustration of what VoltDB is capable of—enabling organizations to ingest high-volume, fast data streams, analyze that data in real time and instantly take action to impact business results."
