Average nursing salary data shows increase in wages and employment

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Nursing jobs are on the increase, according to new statistics just updated by RegisteredNurseRn.com. As the economy continues to struggle with unemployment rates hovering around the 9% mark, health care was the leading industry sector with the highest employment in the most recent survey.

Over half of the employment reported in the health care sector was from healthcare-related occupations, such as registered nurses and nursing assistants.

Data posted on the website, which was gathered and compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, indicates an increase in rn salary and employment rates compared to the last year's statistics--even with the unfavorable economic conditions.

The average hourly wage for registered nurses increased from $30.65 to $32.56. The average rn salary also increased in the U.S. from $63,750 to $67,720. The average hourly and yearly wages are also available for each state on the RN salary page.

"This wasn't a huge surprise," said Sarah Perry, a registered nurse and the administrator of RegisteredNurseRn.com. "Nursing is always in high demand, and the overall employment outlook is excellent. Even in a bad economy, people get sick and health care demands remain fairly consistent."

The gains in employment are expected to increase over time as well. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest projections, as many as 3,200,200 people will be a registered nurse by the year 2018. That makes nursing the fastest growing occupations listed in the survey.

Even in a bad economy, this new data suggests that it is a great time to become a nurse.
