MAUMEE, Ohio, Aug. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA), an accredited, full-time, online public community school, welcomes new and returning students for the 2015-2016 academic year, beginning August 17. OHVA accepts students statewide in grades K through 12 and takes an individualized approach to learning by combining online instruction and hands-on curriculum with the support of Ohio-licensed teachers and an active school community.
OHVA will host back-to-school events in communities across the state on Friday, September 11, 2015, including North Ridgeville, Cincinnati, Kettering, Springfield, North Canton and Pickerington. Families who are interested in the program are invited to attend and learn more from teachers, students and parents. Details on the upcoming events can be found at http://ohva.k12.com.
OHVA strives to help students discover their individual learning style. The program offers advanced learners the ability to progress faster in subjects in which they excel, as well as opportunities for advancement in STEM education. OHVA offers the College Credit Plus program, through which qualified students take college courses for credit and get a head start on their college education. A few OHVA students have received an Associate's Degree before obtaining their high school diploma. Duel enrollment in career and tech programs is also an option for OHVA students.
"My daughter is a quick learner, so this has been a perfect program for her," said Amanda Nobbe, whose oldest child began at OHVA in Kindergarten last year. "She can work at her own pace without sitting in a classroom that is moving too slowly. We also love having the flexibility to get out into the world and learn from hands-on experiences, like a trip to the zoo or the grocery store."
This year, OHVA will launch a Family Academic Support Team (FAST) to bring a holistic approach to restoring a student to educational progress, if he or she is slipping behind. FAST staff members and teachers will work together to meet the needs of the student and family, including helping students work through non-academic issues that may be affecting their performance in school.
"Ohio Virtual Academy is focused around each student's needs – whether that need is to move more quickly through the curriculum because the student is advanced, or to spend more time on a subject where they need more support," said Dr. Kristin Stewart, Head of School at Ohio Virtual Academy. "Our teachers are able to adapt their instruction so that it works for every student in the classroom, and that kind of individual attention is what many families come to us for."
OHVA provides a rigorous and engaging curriculum, including courses in language arts/English, math, science, history, world languages, art and music, as well as elective and Advanced Placement® courses for high school students. College or career minded students can choose from a broad range of profession-focused courses in order to gain a competitive edge for the future, discover their path after high school or explore a possible college major.
