Oldest Supercentenarian in Maryland Celebrates Her 111th Birthday! April 25th named "Goldie Miller Day" for Baltimore County by the County Executive
PIKESVILLE, Md., April 25, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- In honor of her 111th birthday, Griswold Home Care arranged for Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz to name April 25, 2014 "Goldie Miller Day!" Additionally Goldie and her family will be honored with a Governor's Citation recognizing her status as the oldest super-centenarian in the State of Maryland and congratulating her on her day of honor.
According to the largest study of centenarians and their families in the world (New England Centenarian Study, 1994, and Super-centenarian Study, 2006, Boston University School of Medicine), people age 111+ are extremely rare individuals. There are only about 60 or so individuals in the U.S. who exceed the age of 110.
For Goldie and the Millers, family is at the heart of it all. For the past 46 years Goldie has lived happily in her home with her daughter near the heart of downtown Pikesville, MD in District 11. Goldie grew up in Baltimore and is one of seven siblings, all of whom she has survived. Goldie married a physician in 1924 and was happily married for 34 years until his passing in 1958. Goldie's daughter, Natalie, is now 84 years old and is a retired nurse. Goldie is visited daily by her son, Gerald, who is 77 years old and is a retired ophthalmologist.
According to her daughter"Goldie's main passion in life was to work. She was very hard working and loyal to her husband and family." Her son mentioned that Goldie "was very helpful to my father and acted as his nurse and participated in the care of patients. She was always available to care for the family." He added that "We're a very close family. We share activities, meals, and common activities. At the end of the day, what matters most to us is sharing the events of our days constantly."
As part of the larger Miller family, Goldie has 6 beloved grandchildren. Another valued member of Goldie's family's support system is Melissa Derr, one of the full-time caregivers referred by Griswold Home Care during the past 6 years.
Goldie's ability to remain at home is something the family credits for her advanced age. Several years ago, when Goldie was discharged from the hospital and was unable to eat, she needed more than someone to help her feed herself. With the support of Griswold Home Care's referred caregivers, Goldie's son noted that she has been able to have all of her personal care, homemaking and companionship needs met in the home. "The fact that Griswold interacts with her so closely to participate in and regulate her daily activities allows her to retain a more active, personal role in life."
Today, Goldie is fortunate to be in good health, have all of her faculties, and is able to maintain her independence at home. Goldie is quick to smile but is a quiet woman of few words. Goldie's daughter said that "She has lived as long as she has because of her love for her son. He visits her daily rain or shine. He always sits to talk with her and holds her hand." Her son added that Goldie has her good days, but "she just can't dance the way she used to, not having a partner to dance with. But she does love to share with the family. That keeps her motivated."
The state-wide celebration of this remarkable woman's 111th birthday on April 25, 2014 gives the community an opportunity to learn about and to be inspired by Goldie's longevity and her ability to remain living at home with the love of her family and the support provided by Griswold Home Care. The community is welcome to share in the celebration by mailing a personalized birthday card to Goldie and her family: Goldie Miller, c/o Griswold Home Care, 3525 Ellicott Mills Drive, Suite G, Ellicott City, MD 21043.
Griswold Home Care's past celebrations of Goldie's exceptional birthdays included an oversized 109th birthday card signed by the Governor, Delegates, Congress members, and other community dignitaries. And, for Goldie's 110th birthday celebration Griswold Home Care hosted a birthday party in Goldie's home that included a serenade by the Sweet Adeline's quartette.
