ONCOLOGY and the Cancer Network Launch "Consultations in Ethics" Feature
NORWALK, Conn., Sept. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Oncologists regularly struggle with difficult ethical issues in the course of daily practice. To help them respond more confidently to the ethical dilemmas they encounter, UBM Medica US has launched a new feature, "Consultations in Ethics," both in the journal ONCOLOGY and on the Cancer Network.
"Consultations in Ethics" presents actual cases submitted by oncologists, along with discussion of the ethical issues involved. The case reviews are provided by Dr. Paul R. Helft, director of the Charles Warren Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis and a member of ONCOLOGY's Editorial Board.
The inaugural cases and consultations include explorations of issues such as these:
- A patient insists that you explore unproven alternative therapies for his metastatic colon cancer. Are you obliged to discuss these with him?
- How should you treat a squamous cell carcinoma on the vocal cord in a patient with advanced dementia, no surviving relatives, and no advance directives?
- Should you inform your patient's employer that the patient insists on continuing to work despite being told that her ability to do her job safely will be compromised by the opiates she is receiving for pain?
Because arriving at a resolution to an ethical dilemma is often facilitated by discussion with others and consideration of the situation from a variety of perspectives, readers are encouraged to comment on the case discussions on the Cancer Network. Visitors to the site are already adding their thoughts on the feature's first cases.
Readers are also invited to submit cases. Names and identifying details will be changed in any case selected for use in the feature so as to ensure protection of privacy.
