Cordele — Surprised in the act of burglarizing a local residence Wednesday morning, an unidentified subject gunned down an elderly woman who died about three hours later at Crisp Regional Hospital.

Cordele Police Department officers sped to the 106 13th St. N. home of Mamie Wright at approximately 10:45 a.m. when the victim called to report she had been shot three times and had wounds to her neck and leg.

Immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment, she was declared dead just before 2 p.m. Her body will be sent to the state crime lab for a determination of the exact cause of death.

Preliminary investigation of the crime indicates Ms. Wright came home to find that someone had broken into her residence. When the burglar, who was still in the house, realized he had been seen he shot her before fleeing the scene."
