SEATTLE, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Allrecipes.com, the world's #1 food site, today launched its 12th annual Christmas Cookie Countdown, an Allrecipes tradition which features holiday cookie recipes daily on the site for the 25 days leading up to Christmas. This year Allrecipes will host the first annual Cookie Countdown for the Troops using the power of social media. Allrecipes is encouraging home cooks to nominate a member of the US Armed Forces serving abroad through its Allrecipes blog, Facebook fan page or Twitter.com account. Each day from Dec. 1 through Dec. 25, the Allrecipes team will bake four dozen holiday cookies and reveal one deserving recipient of the cookie package on the Allrecipes blog.

"By making daily cookie deliveries to our troops, we're not only celebrating our community's love of baking, but we are thanking members of our Armed Forces who can't be home with family to celebrate the holidays," said Lisa Sharples, president of Allrecipes. "It's great that technology can help bring us together as a community to nominate and recognize these deserving people."

In addition to its daily donations, Allrecipes encourages home cooks everywhere to get into the spirit of giving by sending their own care packages to the troops. To make shipping easy, Allrecipes has compiled a variety of resources explaining how to send cookies to the troops, including the restrictions for shipping edible items to the Middle East and how to package them at: http://allrecipes.com/HowTo/How-to-Mail-Cookies-to-the-Troops/Detail.aspx.

Allrecipes is the top online source for holiday recipes. During the Dec. 2008 holiday season, Allrecipes received more than 4.3 million searches for holiday cookies and anticipates 5.4 million searches this year, a 20 percent increase over last year. Home cooks can also find cookie recipes on the go with the iPhone app, Allrecipes Dinner Spinner, #1 food app for the iPhone.
